Genesis Chapter 17 records the Lord’s appearance to Abram and the establishment of the covenant of circumcision.
When Abram is ninety-nine years old, the Lord appears to him and says, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless.” God changes his name to Abraham, for he will be the father of a multitude of nations. He establishes an everlasting covenant and gives the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession. The sign of the covenant is circumcision. God also changes Sarai’s name to Sarah and promises that she will bear a son, Isaac. Abraham falls on his face and laughs. God confirms the promise concerning Ishmael and commands that every male in Abraham’s household be circumcised that very day.
